6 reasons a fruit punch mocktail is how I stopped procrastinating

Summary: I don't drink, but I drink this every morning. A wave of moms on my feed swore a red focus drink was how they finally got through their lists, so I read the label. Here's what's in it, what the ingredient research says, and why the list gets done now.

Here's all 6 👇

1. I saw the moms first, then I read the label

I don't drink, but I drink this every day. It started because a wave of moms on my feed were talking about the same red drink and how they were finally getting through their list instead of circling it. I was skeptical in the way you're skeptical of anything that promises productivity in a packet. Then I turned the box over, and the ingredients made a kind of sense I hadn't expected. This is that list, one item at a time.

Dopamine is the mechanism. Tyrosine is the raw material.

2. Dopamine is the mechanism. Tyrosine is the raw material.

Procrastination isn't a character flaw so much as a chemistry problem: dopamine is the neurotransmitter behind motivation and follow-through, and when it's flat, everything on the list feels equally impossible. Your body builds dopamine and norepinephrine from an amino acid called tyrosine. Superfocus has 1,000mg of N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine per packet, a form your body absorbs well. I'm not going to tell you what that does to your dopamine, because the packet isn't a lab. I'll tell you it's the biggest dose on the label, and it's there for a reason.

N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine is described as a dietary precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine; no efficacy claim is made. *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Calm focus, not jittery focus

3. Calm focus, not jittery focus

This is the line from the video that turned out to be the most accurate. The caffeine in Superfocus is 75mg, about an espresso shot, so it can't build the wall a 300mg energy drink builds. And it's paired with 150mg of L-theanine, the compound that makes green tea feel different from coffee. In EEG research, theanine increases alpha brainwave activity, the relaxed-but-alert state, within about 45 minutes. The two together are why I can sit down, start the thing, and stay in it, instead of vibrating around it.

Nobre, Rao & Owen, 2008: 50mg L-theanine increased alpha brainwave activity vs placebo, measured 45–105 minutes after intake. Research relates to the L-theanine ingredient, not to Nello or to this product.

The first hour is Alpha-GPC's job

4. The first hour is Alpha-GPC's job

She said it works in the first ten minutes. I'd say the first hour, and I'd point at the one ingredient in here with a single-dose study. Alpha-GPC is a source of choline, the raw material for the neurotransmitter your brain uses for attention. In a placebo-controlled trial, a single 315mg dose roughly doubled the improvement on a Stroop test, the classic measure of staying accurate when your brain wants to take the shortcut. Superfocus has 350mg of GeniusPure Alpha-GPC, which is 315mg of the active compound. The same number, on purpose.

Kerksick et al., 2024: a single 315mg dose of Alpha-GPC produced roughly a 2-fold larger improvement in Stroop total score vs placebo (p=0.046). Research relates to the Alpha-GPC ingredient, not to Nello or to this product.

Lion's mane and rhodiola, and why they're in there

5. Lion's mane and rhodiola, and why they're in there

The other two names on the box are the ones people usually buy in separate bottles. Lion's mane is a mushroom, 500mg of fruiting body extract here, with a long history in traditional use for the mind and a growing pile of early research. Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogen root, 200mg, the one people take for mental stamina under stress. I'd been buying both separately and taking them at random. Having them in the same packet as the tyrosine, the theanine and the Alpha-GPC is the part that made the routine stick.

Lion's mane and rhodiola rosea are described, not claimed. *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

The label, the fruit punch, and the pineapple chunks

6. The label, the fruit punch, and the pineapple chunks

Per packet: N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine 1,000mg, lion's mane 500mg, GeniusPure Alpha-GPC 350mg, rhodiola 200mg, L-theanine 150mg, caffeine 75mg. Zero sugar, sweetened with monk fruit, every amount printed. Fruit Punch, Blue Raspberry or Apple Rush, each with or without caffeine. I do what she does: cold water, ice, a few pineapple chunks in the glass so it feels like a treat and not a task. It's the first thing on my list every morning, and it's the reason the rest of the list gets done.
