6 things I noticed when I swapped coffee for Superfocus on my morning walks

Summary: I drink coffee before a walk the way most people do: out of habit, with a crash built in. A stranger on my feed recommended something else, and the first walk on it went differently enough that I wrote down what I noticed.

Here's all 6 👇

1. Someone on my feed called it the dopamine fruit punch

Not a phrase I expected to act on, but I did. The first morning I took the caffeinated one out on my usual walk and forty-five minutes in I didn't want to turn around. I hit my ten thousand steps in one go, which has never once happened on coffee. I'm not saying that's the drink. I'm saying it had never happened before.

It's the caffeinated one, and it still doesn't feel like caffeine

2. It's the caffeinated one, and it still doesn't feel like caffeine

That was the part I didn't trust. Coffee before a walk meant a racing start and a flat finish. Superfocus has 75mg of caffeine, about half a cup, paired with 150mg of L-theanine, an amino acid from tea that takes the edge off caffeine without taking the alertness with it. Same lift, none of the buzzing-hands feeling.

Nobre et al., 2008: 50mg L-theanine increased alpha brainwave activity, a marker associated with calm, alert mental states. Research relates to the L-theanine ingredient, not to Nello or to this product.

The dopamine part isn't just a nickname

3. The dopamine part isn't just a nickname

The biggest ingredient in it by weight is N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, 1,000mg per serving. Tyrosine is the amino acid the body uses as a building block for dopamine. Whether that's why the walk felt the way it did, I can't tell you. I can tell you it's the first thing on the label, not a trace amount at the bottom.

Forty-five minutes in, I could keep going

4. Forty-five minutes in, I could keep going

Normally that's where I'd start negotiating with myself about the route home. Superfocus has 200mg of Rhodiola rosea, a root that has been used for stamina and fatigue for a very long time, standardized to 3% rosavins and 1% salidrosides. It's the ingredient I'd point at for the second half of the walk.

The walk back didn't feel like a comedown

5. The walk back didn't feel like a comedown

A lot of what I used to call a caffeine crash was a sugar crash with a coffee cup in its hand. Superfocus has zero grams of sugar. It's sweetened with monk fruit and stevia, and there's nothing in it to spike and then drop you on the way home.

Everything that's actually in it

6. Everything that's actually in it

Six things: N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, GeniusPure Alpha-GPC, rhodiola, lion's mane, L-theanine and caffeine, plus B6 and B12. Every amount is printed on the label and third-party tested. If you don't want the caffeine, the caffeine-free version has everything else. Mine's fruit punch. It tastes like fruit punch.
